Registration for the 2023 Cutthroat Classic will open SEPTEMBER 15TH


The Course

The mountain course begins at Rainy Pass on the North Cascades Scenic Highway, elevation 4,870 feet. The route follows the Pacific Crest Trail north on a steady, gradual 5 mile climb to Cutthroat Pass, elevation 6,835 feet. Runners then descend 4 miles to Cutthroat Lake (many switchbacks on a 5-10% grade). The course continues gradually downhill for 2 more miles to the Cutthroat Creek Trailhead, elevation 4,480 feet. Total course length is 10.5 miles.

  • Self-seeding with six waves. If you wish to run with a friend, please be sure to communicate with each other and register for the same start wave. 
  • Wave 1 is for elite or very fast runners only; Waves 2 through 5 will have the most runners at their start time. Wave 6 is for slower runners that plan to speed hike some of the course. 
  • All participants must be able to finish in 4 hours or less.   
  • If you are trying to place in the top 3 in your age category, we ask that you run in the first 3 waves. If you are concerned about your pace, you are welcome to seed yourself in the back of wave 3.
  • Please note that there is a gap between waves 1-3 and 4-6. The shuttles will drop off the first 3 waves at Rainy Pass, then return to Mazama to pick up waves 4-6.
  • If you wish to run with a friend, please communicate about which waves you are signing up for.

Start Times from Rainy Pass (PCT North Trailhead)

  • 8:00 am - Wave 1; finish time is under 1:40 hours
  • 8:03 am - Wave 2; finish time is 1:40-1:59 hours, no walking
  • 8:06 am - Wave 3; finish time is 2:00-2:30 hours (or if you are trying to  place in the top 3 of your age category)
  • 9:15 am - Wave 4; finish time is 2:00-2:30 hours
  • 9:18 am - Wave 5; finish time is 2:30-3:00 hours
  • 9:21 am - Wave 6; finish time 3:00-3:30 hours/minutes 


  • Cost: $95 per person
  • Kids 17 and under are FREE, but must register by the deadline to participate
  • Entry fee includes race bib, Cutthroat Classic t-shirt, post-race lunch, raffle prizes, and awards
  • Military Discount: If you have served or are an active member in the military, we offer a 10% discount.  Please contact adrienne@methowtrails.org for further information
  • No refunds or registration transfers after August 15th, including medical emergencies. $15 refund/transfer fee prior to August 15th. Race Insurance can be purchased through RunReg.

  • Race entries are valid for the registered racer only
  • Methow Trails is a non-profit organization. Income from this event supports year-round trail operations in the Methow Valley. There are no entry refunds, exchanges, transfers or rollovers after August 15th and the event may be cancelled due to severe weather conditions, fire, unhealthy air quality, road closures, natural disasters, or threats to local and national security. In the case of a cancellation, Methow Trails will make every effort to reschedule the event.

Bib Pick-up 

  • 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Friday, September 8th: Winthrop Mountain Sports...we highly recommend this option. 
  • 6:00 - 8:30 a.m. Saturday, September 9th at the Mazama Community Club (red building in Mazama)

Transportation and Parking 

  • 7:00 am - Waves 1-3 depart from Mazama to Rainy Pass
  • 8:45 am - Waves 4-6 depart from Mazama to Rainy Pass
  • 10:00am - 2:00 pm - Return shuttles will leave finish line to the after party in Mazama every ~15 minutes
  • Self-supported shuttles are allowed, but please note that parking is very limited at the start and finish and a Northwest Forest Pass is required. A one-day pass is $5.00 and may be purchased at fee tubes at the Rainy Pass and Cutthroat Trailheads (exact cash or check required).

Racer Bags

  • Runners may leave bags with extra clothing at the startline
  • Bags will be transported to the race finish

Aid Stations

  • There will be one aid station at mile 7 with energy chews, water and sport drink
  • Aid station supplies are packed in by horseback
  • Mile 7 is up and over Cutthroat Pass so runners are encouraged to carry their own fuel supplies

  • Mazama Community Center: From Winthrop, proceed approx. 14 miles west on Hwy 20 to mile marker 179. Take a right on Lost River Road. At intersection proceed straight and then right to park in the Mazama Corral Trailhead lot. Packet pick-up is in the Mazama Community Center-the red building on the eastern end of the parking lot.
